Tranny grinds in 4th
« on: June 23, 2008, 09:59:06 PM »
Every time I shift to 4th gear, it will grind unless I let the revs drop under 2k before shifting....

I'm pretty sure that will mean another tranny in the near future, but is there anything else I could possibly have missed?

Replaced shifter with ssk, tranny fluid (found shavings on drain bolt), and replaced tranny mounts....I guess I'm just waiting for someone to say, it's not the tranny, but I know better....

i guess double clutching into 4 is your only remedy until you get the tranny!

Yeah, I figured as much.  I guess I can hold out on a newer tranny until it is just unbearable to drive, but this is not to be a project car, just something to putz around in!

Will all tranny's for all 318s, E36 or E30 work with the M42...is there any other 5 speed tranny that will work without modification?

i believe that you will need a 5spd from an m42 equipped car because the prop shaft is different.

someone correct me if i'm wrong!

I'll just find a used tranny from a 91 318....that way, there will be no confusion or issue.  I haven't seen a writeup on removing the tranny....but it doesn't look as daunting a task like the E36....any hidden tricks to removing it?

Patience.

Remove the tranny brace and pull down on the tranny so that you can reach the upper bolts torx bolts!

Don't pull down to hard though :)

It seems that some of those torx bolts are accessible from the engine bay, no?  I think this won't be too difficult...

Probably easier to get from the underside. We used a huge extension to get it past the end of the tranny so we could twist the ratchet easier.
