^^^Well, frankly, I don't care for the amenities that come on the 325is--power sunroof, OBC, etc. I like the m50's and s50's because they are chain driven and are DOHC. As well as the "extra potential" that never seems to be exploited, as you have mentioned. Ideally I would go S50, but m50b25 @ 190 ponies is not bad. It's all hypothetical though. As nice as an s50 swap sounds, it will not happen any time soon. For now I'll be satisfied with a good suspension kit and a lighter flywheel.;)

Yeah it's all subjective and each person has their own tastes as to what they want on their cars.

I don't have a desire to fit a full OBC but some do.

My car's PO fitted a power sunroof as well.

Jake catch me offline, I'll get a copy for you today and send it out later!

Keep in mind, any larger engine, even the S/m50 will change the way the car feels as it is also a heavy motor.

^^^The reason I got a 318is and not a 325, is because of the light weight and great balance. But, the  more I read about the s50 swap, it appears that handling is not affected THAT much.

My answer to the whole balance thing is not biased: You drive an s50e30 different from an m42e30 (modded) due to the overall "composure" of the car due to balance. Same way you can drive a fwd to win over an awd/rwd and vice versa. Yes the balance is upset but it's not detrimental to the right driver who knows what he's doing.

As you can see (once again) my opinions are not biased :p

Yeah, "composure" is a good way to put it. I know exactly what you mean.

You can make up for it, but you have disturbed the feel, which was what I was trying to get across.

The 318 is a light tossable car, which is what this car was meant to be, putting a heavy engine in changes that.

Why buy a 318 if you are going to do that?

actually the US S50 is more or less an M50 with 3.0 liters and better cams. The real S50 was only available in Europe and oh what a beast... I saw an E30 M3 with a euro S50 and an E36 M3 with an euro S50 (both owned by the same racer :S) at the track the other day.....reving at 9000 rpm is awesome lol

Hmmm...this is interesting. I imagine the same would apply to our cars, huh. This was taken from s14.net. This guy (Vlad) runs a euro s52 powered e30 m3 and he had a proffesional driver take it for a spin on the track:

Quote
Vlad's car is very nice, and very very fast.
Its point blank the nicest engine swap car I personally have ever seen. The guy who did it, did a great job.
Its just a flat out nice E30 M3 with or without the swap. Those ///M stripes,,, you cannot even feel them running the back of your hand over them. The car is super tight.

Keep in mind,,, I have been driving S14 equipped E30 m3s for a pretty decent amount of time.
I can tell if I have left too much change in my pocket when I drive an e30 M3.
Yes Vlad's is really fast,,, but 100% honestly,,, even with his coil over suspension I felt the weight.
Was it completely objectionable,,, no.
If I had never driven an S14 one I probably would not even have noticed,,, but I did.

Would I "personally" trade my car's balance for his car's power,,, a very honest no,,, I personally still prefer the momentum and balance of the original. Power doesn't really get me that goofy,,, I am a momentum driver,,, I like driving a car thats so balanced I can carry almost WOT momentum at all times. I feel its more rewarding as a driver.
Its alot harder to carry almost reckless momentum with that car (at least in my limited laps behind the wheel).

Its much more point and shoot than an S14 version. You really have to make sure you are pointed in the right direction before picking up the throttle.
I personally dont enjoy point and shoot cars that much.
it still feels like an e30 M3,,, just a bit "different" (and not meaning its huge grunt) I really did notice the weight.
It was really the perfect test chamber,,, a track I have countless laps on in s14 powered e30 m3s,,, driving it / riding in it almost back to back with my S14 powered one.

Is it a nice car,,, absolutely. Its really very fast.
To me way more intoxicating than the power, was the sound,,, it really sounds awesome. Spine tingling sound out of that thing.
I wanted to keep driving it just to do 4 - 3 heel toe rev match downshifts they sounded so good.

After driving it, almost everyone has asked so do you want an S50 now,,, um no.
Do I respect Vlad's car (or any engine swap ones), yep, they are fast.
Am I "personally" still delieriously happy with the supreme balance of the lil ole S14 version, you betcha. Maybe even moreso now.
As modern cars gain weight and power, real perfectly balanced momentum cars get more rare by the day.
If I didn't drive e30 m3s,,, I'd probably be driving 944s2's, or a Lotus Elise / Exige or spec Miatas or maybe even an '02.
