Central locking, is it needed?

This shows two different types of lock cylinders. One type is central locking style, and the other is a standard lock cylinder.

What would stop me from ripping the central lock system out of my car??

Can I just buy the non-central lock cylinder, and hook it up to the linkages to get a more reliable locking system??

central locking ( with the instalation of an allarm ) is the greatest thing ever...you can lock your car from a distance , or you can unlock your car while running to get into it through rain , so you do not sit on rain trying to unlock your car and getting all wet...( if you know what i mean )
steer with the rear !!!

...the central locking makes you life easier!thats all.. with ripping it out you can save a couple of gramms, the acceleration will be better.. :D
its not really necessary..

i do not think that 150 - 400 grams will make your car better... But if you go for the ultimate car , then yes you should probably rip it off , also rip off the carpet ( it is 20 kg ) , you may rip off the internal panel of the doors also ( 500 grams ) , and the rear seats , the sunroof ( if you have any ) , buy your self a carbon hood , fenders , and generaly carbon parts...this could make your car better...

i was justs saying............. ( i have seen people do these stupid things - rip off very light stuff with the exuse to save weight thats why i said what i said...people are capable of anything........anyway... )

right now ,and at least for the next year, i am building the ultimate car for the street... with nothing unnecessery in it! goal are 900kg.. :D there i am removing everything..!!:D

building the ultimate car , will need you to remove everything... and much more...
changing the front and the back hood , the fenders and everything possible with carbon makes it even lighter...
steer with the rear !!!

i agree with my friend marcos here. its with grams that you save kg. and ligther is more fun. i see the difference between carrying my toolbox vs an empty trunk so yeah lightweight is fun and although if removing unnecessary components seems useless. it totals up to an overall better car. depends what you're after.
i too, will go through a lightweight process of removing everything thats not usefull. i already started with a/c powersteering and trunk carpets.. and i will remove the interior stained carpets and insulation, and lighten the wiring harness. (there are so many useless sensors like brake pad wear!!? and such)

i guess its about purity as well. a lightweight car is not only appealing in terms of performance but in terms of integrity. i spent a few days looking at E30 M3 race cars at my bmw specialist who's also a racer. everything is made to be simple and easy access and light. it was pleasing just looking at how the car was built.

so, to answer the question. if you're going to change your locking mechanism might as well go for the simpler and lighter and best engineered system.

I uh... man... this went the totally wrong way... hahaha.

I wanted to know if they were a direct swap out. My locks are starting to go, and I don't feel like spending 500+ dollars to get my central locking stuff working again.

I geuss it would save weight, but that's not my reason for the switch. I want dependability, reliability, and dependability, hahaha.

But really, I went from owning a simplistic truck, to a complicated car, and I want dependability, and simplicity back again. Most likely not totally back, but still...


Oh, and the carpet is coming out, and Rhino Liner is going in... eventaully.

But seriously, I was having lock cyl problems too and I did zoso's $25 ($35 now) remote install and now it's all good. :D

well last night it took me about 5 minutes (no joke) to get my key out of the cylinder after locking the car up...

I'm wondering how many times I have till my key is sticking out of the door, and all the doors are locked... What then?? break a window?

I could go to lexan windows after that, but I don't want to do that yet, hahaha.

So are they interchangable??

breaking-in e30s is really easy because of the shape of the interior lock buttons. dont break a window. just hide a clothe hanger somewhere accessible. i.e. behind fog lights.
