Author Topic: Sloppy chain noises after new chain tensioner (Read 3461 times)

I replaced the chain tensioner over a month ago and I still have chain slop between 2,000-3,500 rpms (most audible at that range) and I am assuming the guides are worn out or worse, the chain is worn out. I've been reading the Bentley and have an idea what I might be getting into but wanted to hear from others.

What is most likely the cause of the slop? How bad can this fix be?

Gears + Chain + Guides are probably worn. If you can turn your own wrenches, about $500-$600 in parts. If you have to pay a shop to do it, I'm guessing $1000-$1200.

Shit if thats the case I'll just run this motor down this year and throw in an M50 for about as much as it would cost to fix this motor.

I would recommend you use the M44 tensioner. Its about 1/8-1/4" longer then the stock tensioner and may take up more of the slack.

Just be warned, do not use the M44 tensioner if you replace all the chain components because it will put too much tension on the new components and cause the chain to 'whine' loudly.

I will be replacing the M44 tensioner with a new M42 tensioner on Tuesday. If you would like I will gladly sell you M44 tensioner. It only has about 1 hour run time on it.

IIRC the M42 tensioner has been discontinued. All that is sold is the M44. I have read that at several sites. Check your #'s

OK my part number is 11 31 1 743 187.

The M44 one is 11 31 1 743 187, so it seems I already have one. Oh well.

Hmm, I just checked the part number for the M42 and it is the number you just listed for the M44.

So now I have a question, why the hell does the chain whine so damn loud on this M42 I just built?

It runs like a top, everything is brand new. We are scared to drive for fear of tearing the timing components up. I will have to start a new thread to address this issue.

Hi peerless, hope you do start that new thread, cause I did the entire timing chain system and it whines as well. I done about 1000km with the new chain and it is still like that. It drives perfect its just so annoying at times. Not sure what the cause is.

Thank you for responding, I will start a new thread today. The new engine has about 1hr run time on it and we are a little concerned.
