M42 hesitation problems + possible fueling issues
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:51:59 PM »
Let me start of by saying who ever worked on this car before I owned it completely screwed just about everything up on the car, most of which I have fixed or am fixing at this moment.  I replaced the transfer pipe on the tank since it was crimped in two spots which I thought would have fixed the fueling cut out issues when turning right but as of today it's back (haven't driven it that hard up until today).  Not sure what would be causing this since that tube has been replaced and seems to be flowing well.

My other problem is the motor seems to pull a bunch of timing on WOT runs at high rpms.  Normally below 4,000 rpms its great then it starts pulling timing and eventually stops accelerating up near 5,000 rpms.  It doesn't do this everytime but it does it so much that I just don't drive it fast.  I think it might be bad gas but I added Sunoco 94 to the half a tank of Shell 93 (which locally is bad gas apparently) and it seems to do it about the same.

Haven't checked the fuel pressure yet, but I think thats where I will go next.  I do believe this motor is chipped but I am not sure what chip it has.

Things I have replaced that could be related to all of this.

transfer pipe on tank
fuel filter
spark plugs
ran seafoam through the gas

So any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No leaks and that tube seems to be fine.

The ECU isn't throwing any codes.

The throttle response is great, revs nice, just sucks at WOT at high rpms and when I take a hard right hand turn.

Oh and the fuel guage moves around more then I think it should.  Sometimes goes from 3/4 to half to 3/4.

Check your fuel pressure coming out of the tank. Might be your fuel pump or fuel filter! I had alot of issues of poooooooooor mechanics on my 318is. They removed the Blower fan, worst of all they forgot to put the oil pickup back inside the oil pan.

+1 fuel filters get dirty over time and fuel pumps can wear out.

Check out either http://www.realoem.com or http://www.bmwfans.info if you need the BMW part number for it.

I'd rather just throw in a Walbro, half the price and twice the capacity.
