91is M42 replace rod bolts during subframe replace?
« on: May 08, 2008, 11:24:52 PM »
Hello all I am in the process of gathering all parts needed to bring my 200XXX  91is back to life.

I have had no problems with the 91is except chain tensioner, water pump, spark plugs, cracked front subframe, right rear spring sagging, steering rack leak and the 4:10diff blew up. Other then that I have had no problems with it.

I am very impressed with its durability and economical performance through out the years.

Well now it is time to make sure my 91is stays alive for another 200+

Right now I have acquired a new front subframe because my original subframe was cracked on the passenger side motor mount bracket.
I have welded the TMS Reinforcement brackets on to prevent future stress cracks.

I have a steering rack from a 89i with new tie rods.

Oil pan gaskets, figured when it is on the lift and the subframe is out of the way it would be a good time to check the rod bearings and replace the rod bolts (Im thinking this would be a good idea because If the rod breaks loose it destroys the block, Please tell me if I should replace the bolts and where I should get them. Thanks)

I have a new guiebo and rear shocks and  shock mounts, and tranny mounts.

I also am looking for the best break pads of choice. I am interested in a good low, low dust pad... I dont want to have to change them often or have to clean my rims either, or eat my rotors up. So hopefully you can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Motor mounts are in excellent condition so I see no need to change, unless convinced otherwise...

Well Im only waiting on buying bolts and what ever else I should replace when I am in the crank case.

 Thanks for the advice

Will post Pictures asap

Rod bolts can be had from http://www.rmeuropean.com or just about any other online BMW parts house, and the dealer of course.

15ft lbs then 70deg pull to torque them.

Personally I wouldn't mess with them. Most BMW bearings I have seen from numerous tear downs are all in good shape with 200,000+ miles.

I would however check your upper pan bolts around the oil pickup area. When reinstalling your upper oil pan bolts make sure to use lock tite on the front 6 bolts, if not all of them.
