M44 stroker 'head Qs...
« on: April 27, 2008, 05:31:50 PM »
Hello all! I hope someone can help me out a little here.

Right, I need to know a few engine specs for the M44B19.

Using a 90mm stoke (M47N crank) and 86.40mm bore (enlargened M44 pistons from JE Pistons), what would the deck-height be If I used a standard head with 1.40mm head gasket? I also need to know the standard M44 cylinder head volume so i can work out CR's too.

Anyone?
I cant find the info anywhere

Cheers!
Scott

Thanks for hte response though ;)

I think I have deck clearance figured, so does anyone know what the M42/M44's cylinder head volume is? I don't really want to have to get a pippet gauge out... :S

Hi there. I´m not 100% sure, but I´m pretty sure the combustion chamber on both M44 and M42 is 34cc, and the stock piston dish is 10cc
About the deck height, on the stock M42, the piston is 0,15mm above block deck. that is with 10:1CR, and stock block/crank.

Now, I see what your point is, (but correct me if wrong) building a 2110cc with street maners and keep it as stock as possible, (in measures)
Well, I don´t know if you are aware that the M47N crank needs a few mods to make it work, and also a custom made front extension. this would make the crank a two piece crank, which I´m not very comfortable with.
Metric mechanic makes this conversion but they will not sell just the extension.
I was over that dilema a few weeks ago, and finally opted for the M47 88mm crank and S52 pistons(86,4mm)
Very little modification to the front of the crank, and a 2 mm shave to the pistons will yield a streetable 11,5:1 CR, 0.5mm deck height, and 2044cc.
Also this crank is better counterweighed, and far more reliable than the M47N
I´m doing this to my engine right now, so if you have any more questions, please feel free to make them.
I hope this helped you.

Thanks for the reply! Thanks for letting me ask a few q's. I first got interested when I read Gizmo's post. However, he was aiming for a S42 replica, and not anything really lairy when it came to 'head work.
I plan on having quad throttle bodies (ITB's) , Dastek Unichip, and a well sorted valvetrain (cams, valves, springs solid lifters etc). Many people negelect the head as source of power, opting for forced induction instead. Pitty, as theres sooo much power in the head (in general, not just M42's or 44's).

I am interested in the M47N beacuse it has a large stoke at 90mm.

Although, I am open to new ideas! I have thought about the M47 88mm crank too.
One thing I am certain about are the piston and rods. Ill be opting for 86.44mm Pistons (same bore as the S52 ones, but forged by JE Pistons, from their M44 piston blueprints). At the same time, ill be ordering forged M44 (140mm) Pauter rods. I'm aiming to reduce reciprocating mass by quite a bit.

So your set up is:
Stroke: 88mm
Bore: 86.4mm
Deck: +0.5mm
CR: 11.5:1
Displacement: 2044cc

Is that CR with the 1.74mm head gasket, or the 2.04mm gasket?
