Flywheel Chatter?
« on: April 16, 2008, 09:21:21 AM »
So, i have a noisy motor at idle, especially before the car reaches proper operating temp.

I hear rattling similar to what I had when I installed a lightweight flywheel and M5 clutch on my e36 M3.

it only really rattles when the car is at idle with my foot off the clutch. the sound is eliminated when i press the clutch in.

what part do i need to replace? or can i get away with it now until i get rid of this damn glasspack custom jive exhaust that is held by one hanger...

thanks.

Sounds like a bad throwout bearing to me. Look it up on pelicanparts.com. Not sure how difficult it is to install.

Yep, probably going to fail soon.  You'll have to drop the exhaust, driveshaft, and transmission to access it.  While you're in there, check the existing clutch disc & pressure plate, pilot bearing, and seals on both ends of the input shaft.

I have the same problem. Pelican sells centerforce clutch kits. How do I tell whether I have a "dual mass flywheel" or not?

Hmm, I vaguely remember that some did come with a single mass flywheel.
It\'s not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

Not true.

I bought E36 m42 bottom end sometime ago and it had single mass flywheel.

I bought an M42 single-mass flywheel a while back and bought the matching clutch kit, too.  It's not common in the USA.  Damn thing still weighs about 20lbs though.

I have exactly the same noise as you with my ebay lightweight flywheel/e36 m3 clutch combo and its been like that from the start. The throw out bearing was replaced though so i dunno its a bit embaressing waiting at the lights but i live with it.

That coupled with noisy timing chain people think my car is just gonna fall apart on the spot.

I don't know about the Getrag 240s, but the Getrag 260s that came w/ the M20-engined E30s are notorious for having noisy layshaft bearings.  The sound goes away when you depress the clutch pedal.  If it is the layshaft, typically you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, i was reading some threads about that on e30tech when this place was OC. I'm thinking of doing a Trans and diff fluid change with some Red line or Royal Purple.

Yeah, my car didnt sound like that from the beginning. after about 30k, it started to chatter. at first it was only with the ac on. You should have heard the  car when i still had it. Shrick Cams, AA track pipe, Stromung, and a stuck Clutch fan made the car sound like a beast.
