Turbo M42 cams? solid lifters?
« on: April 16, 2008, 07:39:50 AM »
What would be a bigger gain?

Getting custom turbo cams ground for hydraulic lifters

or converting to solid lifters and getting custom turbo cams ground with solid lifters?

How hard would a solid lifter conversion be? i know ive seen a couple of posts around about the conversion.
Anyone gone through with a conversion to give exact details?

I have bought a set of forged rods for the car, and a head stud kit for the head, when i have it all apart again im contemplating what to do with the cams

This is the next step for me as well, but solid data is very hard to come by.  The key advantage of mechanical lifters is that you can raise the RPM's.  Even if you don't raise the rev limit there is additional protection against over revs in case of a miss-shift as you won't float the lifters.  I'm interested in what cam selection you're looking at and where you came across the data.

Currently i am just hunting around for more information to decide what route i should take.

i believe that with solid lifters you can also get more lift than hydraulic, is this true?

I believe you can get more lift with mechanical as well.  We have a stock intake manifold, but want to go custom.  We'd make the intake manifold and head changes all at the same time.  You can see pics and some details here:
