Does anyone have a picture of where the camshaft sensor is and the part number can't find it on bavauto.com thanks

cam shaft sensor... right on the head front of the head, by where the cams are...

thanks i appreciate i was looking for the word camshaft position sensor, but it was called trigger contact here, it sux when you don't know much about cars and your try to fix it on your own. Thanks again!!!! I dont know what i would do with out m42club!

I think the car will run with a faulty camshaft sensor. It will simply fire a spark everytime the cylinder comes up instead of just during the actual compression stroke where it would fire if the cam sensor were working. Not sure if you actually need one or were thinking it would fix a not running at all situation.

You should test it before you replace it .You should have 1250 ohms when you hook a meter up to it .

not necessarily. If the sensor is gone, sure it could run. but i've seen several occasions where the wire breaks right at the end by the sensor.

yea the car just turned off in the middle of the road the other day, lost all power, theres electricity, it cranks but no start. I unplugged the battery for a minute, plugged back in and tried to start the car, it turned on, reved and then shut down again. The pedal fault reads 1244 thats why i suspected the camshaft sensor... any ideas what else it could be? I have new sparks, didn't test the coils yet.

and did you check the cam sensor?

yup its the cam sensor, it was giving zero ohms reading. Ordered the part waiting for it to come in, weekend project woot woot! I also have to change one of the radiator hoses, i was thinkin i might as well take the valve cover off and paint that too finally! If i do i'll post some pictures up of it. latez!

Do you mean that a faulty cam sensor alone will NOT cause no-starting issue?

I have a no-start situation with my 91 318i with M42. I have been doing all testing for over two weeks and the only broken thing I found so far was a faulty cam sensor (no ohm reading on multimeter). I am going to test/clean ICV and MAF this weekend. Thanks.
