I killed my second M42 motor in 2 years! My first one went out via the chain slipping in the summer of 06. This time.. well, I'm not really sure what happened, but something in the motor really gave out. Take a look..

I gave up on M42s after this and swapped in an M50.

Either an abusive relationship or irreconcilable differences. Joking of course. I was just wondering what sound that would make.

Haha. No, definitely not a NOS issue here...

As to the sound that it made, it's very hard to describe and I have tried really hard to erase it from my memory!

You probably spun the rod bearing.  Here's what happened to me 1hour after taking ownership of my car.

Still haven't had a chance to tear down the bottom end, but I suspect improper oiling due to oil pan bolts.

The problem is obvious... Number 1 cylinder is missing a piston. LMAO..

I'm also intimate at this sound. Happened to me @ 7,100 rpm....

Where did the piston head go? How did it drop below the cyl. and pop out the side???

Judging from the picts, it's still in the block.  That hole ain't big enough for the piston to fit thru.

Yeah, my best guess is that it's in pieces down in the block somewhere.. but I don't really know.

My piston was at the very top of the cylinder.  The wrist pin was laying near the AFM.
The rod was completely missing.

what does the bottom of the head look like, I'm betting the valves for that clyinder were demolished as well...

I had a similar incident happen w/ my prior 94 Bronco...  after buying it from a mom & pop dealership, 30 mins into my ride home @ 60mph, there was a horrendous, loud -BANG- proceeded by a dense Spy Hunter smoke screen behind the vehicle, followed by metal particles hitting & bouncing below the truck onto the highway and a continuation of what sounded like hundreds of metal pots & pans being banged around...  Eventually I coasted off to the side of the highway, had to have a State Trooper come to assist so I would not get slammed by approaching vehicles since I was a sitting duck and had to wait for a flat bed service.  When bmwpower and I finally removed the 5.0 engine from the truck and started disassembly - there was NOTHING salvagable from that engine at all...

The crank looked like someone stuck the journals in a blender, the #4 and #8 cylinder walls were completely "chiseled out" and gone about half way up the block, the rods to both the #4 and #8 pistons were completely sheered off from the crank, both rods were all bent, there was a nice hole in the oil pan, the camshaft was also torn up from all the detonated metal particles washing around inside the engine, tons-o-metal chunks in the oil pan and the valves & combustion area on the bottom of each head were also slightly damaged.

So, yes, I too can relate to a slight, unexpected highway "detonation"...  :)

Yeah it happened at night, too.  A huge fireball engulfed the car.  A couple of cars stopped and told me that it looked awesome and that they saw it happen from 1/4 mile back!

The valves obviously are bent, but not as bent as I'd expect.  I'll try to post a pic today.
