E30 M42 No spark
In December, after replacing the steering rack, I moved my (soon to be “for sale”) 318is project car out of the garage to the driveway, nose out on a slight down grade. It hadn't been started much in the past few years and was running a bit rought, so I revved it pretty good and it spit some nasty rusty snot about 5 feet out the exhaust onto the garage floor. Next project was to repair the speedo sensor connector wiring.
Now the starter spins, but there is no spark. I have a spark tester and also connected a timing light to verify…nada.
At first, I thought it might be a fuel problem. I added a few gallons of gas since it was low. I tested and swapped the fuel relays with spares, even swapped the fuel pump with a working unit to no avail. Last night I checked the resistance at the crank and cam sensors (at the connector) and got good readings according to the Bentley manual. I also swapped in a spare coil pack, still no spark. My last resort was switching the ECU with another working unit, still no go. I am stumped!
The Motronic stomp test gives me a 1444 code, which indicates "all clear."
Do you have any ideas for me before I have it towed off for service?
Thanks!
