Replacing my stock air meter

My e36 318IS is currently using the bulky and somwaht restrictive stock air meter and I am thinking of replacing it with something else.

I saw several air meters on sale in ebay that looks just like the one in the link above. May I know if those air meter will work in my car and what modifications I need to get it to work?

Anything can be made to work :p

But this one is not easy one and it seems gains are questionable. Electric signal coming out of that is completely different compared to stock unit. Also it does not have temperature sensor like stock unit. In theory you should have a circuit that compensates for that.

Also, that unit can produce wildly oscillating signal if the properties of intake tract are not optimized for it.

So it is in no means plug and pray job. There is one guy here in forum who has done lots of work in this area and to me it seems it might not be worth all the trouble.

a good portion of the bulk is from the factory airbox, or atleast of the apparent bulk.

There was a neat mod on here where the owner fabricated a box that would be in the front left of the engine bay, and placed a K&N cone filter in the box.  His version was quite attractive.  and he hid the powersteering reservoir in there too, which is something I'd love to accomplish.

this is a modification I would like to do for my car.  click modifications and CAI.

in this way the bulk of the airbox has been really minimized.  The Powersteering relocation is also attractive.

That looks pretty nice.

Question, is his "before" picture all stock?  I don't have the black peice cover where the lights are at the very end of the intake at the front of the car.

yeah this is the stock setup - apart from the power steering reservoir

I thought something was missing from mine.... i'm having a hard time finding just that part, the part that covers up where the lights are.   Anyone know part number?  I've been looking through realoem but I can't seem to find it.

quick question and not to get off topic, but what is the riveted plate on the driver's side strut tower?
