another window problem
« on: March 17, 2008, 06:53:06 PM »
My driver's side window worked but a few days ago just stopped, when I press the button on the switch at idle I can hear it bog down the engine a bit, at idle, but the window doesn't move.  It's not the switch or a fuse or the breaker, any ideas?

Some things I've seen on the forums plus my own experience here:

Too low amperage of a fuse (30A is the right one at #17)

Opening up the window switches and cleaning them to get rid of black crud and in some cases, rebuilding the solder bumps. Getting illumination in the window switch doesn't guarantee it is clean inside.

Checking for corrosion in the wiring connector above the door jamb switch.

Testing for continuity in the wiring harness.

Lubricating the window regulator.

I recently fixed my two rear windows (91 318i) by replacing the wiring harnesses. Three wires were broken completely apart in one, while frayed insulation on two wires created an irritating short in the other.

Hope this helps.
