how would i go about finding out whether my pistons are all fully functioning? (IE : rings in good shape, etc) would a compression test be sufficient in determining what else i should be fixing on my m42?

I would run a compression test and a leakdown test

how much is the tool for a leakdown test? where can you get them?

If you have an air compressor you can purchase the testing equipment from Harbor Freight Tools for <$40, and do it yourself.
