Timing Chain
« on: March 07, 2008, 06:01:30 PM »
Hi guys, I've got a 93 318is Coupe M42

Just wondering after I replaced my timing chain, cam, crank and idler gears, all guides as well and tensioner, My engine seems to be making a whinning noise when you accelerate and decelerate using engine braking. It is most noticeable from 1500-3000 RPM and at about 20-40km/h. And mainly when the engine is warming up.

Could this noise be the fact the chain just needs to wear in with the components? I am also using Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5W30 oil. Next change I'm going back to 10W40 (ran better). Since chain replacement I've only done 1000km. I hardly drive the car only twice a week.

Oh, and also the noise is similar to a timing belt being tensioned slightly too tight. I had a mechanic tell me that the chain just needed wearing in.

Any advice would be great.
Thanks, Nick

I replaced the following:
Timing Chain, All 4 Rails, Cam Sprockets, Crank Sprocket, Deflection Wheel, Upper & Lower Gasket, Crank Seal, Cam Sensor O Ring, Tensioner, Crank Bolt, Water Pump, Thermostat, O Ring, & Housing Gasket & All 3 Belts.

The engine itself runs smoothly.

I got my parts from Pelican Parts - the sprockets are all genuine BMW.

It could just be me thinking it sounds different but their might not be anything wrong. It's actually gotten better. I drove it yesterday, and sounds very good.

Thanks for your help and comments. I'll just drive it more and see how we go.

It may just need to settle in.

I just did my M30 and my M42 timing chain.  They all make a little whine when new.  Just give it some running time and it should be fine.
