I'm a newbe e30 owner and I just noticed my needle dancing as well. I called the prior owner and she said "Oh just tap it a couple of times and it will settle down" highly techinical analysis (LOL) but it worked so I suspect a loose nut / connection. But I thought I was the only one as well.
