E36 oil pan+windage tray on E30 M42??
« on: February 24, 2008, 03:41:31 PM »
Is it possible to use the E36 oil pan and windage tray in an E30, or is there some kind of clearance problem with the underside or with the oil pump?
In one of the threads I was reading about swapping an E36 m42 into an E30, they mentioned that you want to keep the E30 oil pans.

My E30 engine recently exploded and damaged the upper oil pan.  I have a perfectly good E36 oil pan and am wondering whether I can use it on the E36 motor that I'll be putting into my E30.

FWIW, here are some pics of the damaged E30 motor:

i would think there is no reason not to, but you may have to use the e36 m42 pan as well (the big one piece). i've got an e36m42 in my garage, but i haven't tried putting the windage tray on an e30 m42 pan... if someone has one locally and wants to give it a shot they're more then welcome to test fit.

It doesn't fit, it will hit the swaybar. Only way to make it fit is to cut'n'weld ;)

definitely will not fit.. in the E36, the M42 is further back. so the sump is behind the cross member. Where as in the E30, the sump is in front of the cross member

where exactly does material need to be removed? I have an E36 m42 that i'm swapping into my e30, and would rather use the e36 pan if possible.

The subframe are in different places for both E30 and E36.. In the E30 the subframe is further back relative to the engine position, where as for the E36, it's further to the front.
Hence the different designs for the oil pans.

i sense sarcasm.. :p
Anyway, if you're really into trying, then better to take some measurements on the 2 different oil pans. I have both oil pans and looking at them, I know it'll be too much trouble...

As for using the windage tray on the E30 oil pan, need some shaving and welding to have the tray installed... Worth the trouble?? Not for me..

There is a crank scraper available for the M42.

http://www.crank-scrapers.com/prod01.html

We have one on the race car.

Thanks for the lead, rob_e30! I guess the E30 oil pan + crank-scrapers.com is the only way to go. Gotta have the teflon version...
