Marc, where are you? I can diag the car for you if you like. For now, check for air leaks everywhere, pour water or whatever over the inlet and check for changes in idle. Check all the resistances on all the sensors for motronic. it's not a complicated system, you should be able to figure out what's going on if you're methodical. And you're correct, nearly all UK cars have no O2 sensor and no cat. We have a different eprom in the ecu to US cars (same ecu).
high idle means something is wrong, most likely air leak. Check the rubber bellow from AFM to TB for splits, and the hoses to the ICV. Make sure the TB idle scew is backed out all of the way, and that there's slack on the throttle cable. check your plugs too, are they sooted?

i agree with most 02 sensor or possible sticking injector put a fuel pressure gauge on it pressure it up and see if it drops quickly, if it does pull the intake and fuel rail out with injectors on it pressure it up again and you should be able to see which one or ones is leaking, becareful with the last step, dont want anyone burning the car down unless you have full coverage,   ps just turn the key enought to power the fuel pump dont crank the car,

I just skimmed the thread, but has any one tried replacing their fuel pressure regulator?

Tim, im in Peterborough.   I have now sealed all the breather hoses going to the ICV, which seemed to help it, it still has the occasional day when it will run really rich!   Im still only getting about 200 miles to the tank, and I dont thrash it everywhere.

Going to pull the plugs this weekend to see what they look like.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone
