Muffler Straps for a Super Turbo!
« on: January 30, 2008, 01:26:14 PM »
Hi, this is a great site and after lurking here for awhile and digging for a bit of info I thought I'd ask the forum about my next project!

I'm about to replace the rusted out back half of my exhaust system and I'm wondering if OEM muffler straps will hold the Walker Super Turbo muffler firmly enough as it's a bit smaller than the OEM muffler?

We bought our brilliant red 318iS a few months ago with the idea of it being a rolling renovation as we needed another car this winter. It's been very straight forward to work on and we've been having fun slowly getting the car back into good shape. Can't wait for the spring when we can dare to open the sunroof and clean that up. Another high point will be the deep polish to see if we can change the car's color from pink to brilliant red again. The BBS's need a renovation as well, no shortage of improvements to make at the moment. Recently I've been able to remove the old alarm system's, yes plural, and also tracking down other electrical problems and water leaks.

Thanks for any help about the straps!

I've heard the Super Turbo doesn't align properly with one of the exhaust hangers and that an extra hanger and some creative engineering need to be done to have it sit properly.  Mind you, I havent tried putting one of these on, just going from hearsay.

This is true.  I have done this a few years ago and needed two extra universal hangers in addition to using the stock hangers.  I used different holes in the stockers to tighten everything up.  Creative engineering is needed but it will work.  Good luck.

The shop that did my magnaflow (similar size to the super turbo) actually welded the straps to the sides of the muffler. It works, but if you have a shop do the exhast work, tell them to make straps and not to weld it. I now have no way of taking the exhaust off. If I ever have to take the driver's side half shaft out, the exhaust actually needs to be bent... Needless to say, it was about impossible to replace the rear wheel bearing on that side. ;)
