Another Bulgarian fan!
« on: January 18, 2008, 05:34:56 AM »
Hi guys, My name is Victor and recently I have been told by a memeber of your community(Ludiagsm) about this forum. Eversince I haven't stop reading numerous threads regarding the 2.1 liter conversion for my M42 E36.
It is a long bumpy road to take and so far nobody in Bulgaria has done it, and I hope I will be the pioneer here. You can imagine I have read all about the MM conversion and the threads of the guys here with simular coversions here and I have a few questions.
I have been told that ordering custom pistons is very risky since most times they don't come as ordered (I mean CR, piston rings etc.) Is there anyone here who can sell S50B30/32 pistons to me(ready for the swap). Please have in mind I have found the M47 Crank relatively cheap in Bulgaria (this is for you Mike, I know you have pistons for sale, but I will use the M47 crank, and yours will not work).
I can order the same pistons as those of Ludiagsm, but they are 85mm and are ment to use with the stock M42 crank.
If I can not find the custom pistons for the 2043-4 conversion, I will have to settle with smaller bore of the block 85mm and use my pistons or M44 ones.
Of course this means I should use different rods( any ideas if the M50 rods will work with these pistons lenghtwise)
The smaller bore means the final CC will be something like 194X which is not that much less than 2043(a budjet conversion)
Also for the moment I will not change my intake manifold and exhaust since this will really affect the price if changed to custom.
As for the valve springs, Ludiagsm told me mine are double and as far as he is concerned, there is no need to change them as well as the hydrolic lifters with solid ones(besides the mass reducing, why else it is done). Ludiagsm also mentioned he is reving his 318 IS up to 8500RPM with stock valve springs and lifters  and I believe him(seen it happen)
I would like to ask about the lightening of the crank. Is it a good idea, can it be done and would I have problems with the balance in the high revs.
I forgot to add, my flywheel is lightned already!

Many questions that need consideration, but I am trying to get all the info before the start. As I sayd most times I hear "It's not worth it", Go FI it will be cheaper" but I like it NA, and I can't stop thinking of  beating a 325 with my four banger :D.
And now for appetiser I am posting some pictures of my beauty. I have done really a lot about the looks(custom interior mods, full M-package which I haven't shot yet, Xenon lights, angel eyes etc.) Now it is engine's turn :)

zdrave Victor,

I'm considering stroking my M42 and I'll be in Sofia at Christmas, as my Fiancee is Bulgarian.

Would you mind sharing the details of the BG supplier(s) of the 'cheap' M47 crankshafts as I can carry one back in my baggage?

Mnogo blagodarya,

Darren

Hello there.
Like I have said in many post like this one, it is as easy as buying from ebay a nice set of M3 pistons (S50 or S52) and taking them to a machinist to shave about 3mm off the top, and making the valve pockets. I bught my set of 6 S52 pistons and rods in california (I live in Spain) and I paid for them $250 shipped.
I paid $100 for the machining work, used M42 rods, and ready to go...
By the way, I have the M47 crank, with S52 pistons and I have 2064cc with 11,5:1 CR.
