I thought the M42 didn't have a knock sensor.

The E30 cars do not have a knock sensor, how ever the E36 m42 does. According to people at my local dealership the knock sensor plays a vital role in engine timing and fuel delivery and if your car is running really sluggish this is probally your problem. My knock sensors went bad and Bmw said it was critical that i repair them. Their quote was $1100 total including labor. Thankfully im not an idiot and didn't listen to their mechanics BS. After searching around for a day or so i found a specialty german auto repair shop willing to replace it for $150 bucks total haha so my advice to you is to find a fair shop who will replace it for a reasonable price.
