So I am swapping a m42 into my 2002. Does anyone know which coolant line is the feed and which is the return?

Also what is the valve that is connected to these lines? What does it do.

If you are talking the heater hoses, the lower hose that hoes to the head is the hot water feed.

The valve back there is a thermostatic safety valve, part of a USA recall. E30 heater cores have shown a likelihood to fail and dump hot water on the drivers foot.

On the 2002 side I don�t recall which is the hot water feed. My guess is it doesn�t matter too much. Maybe the return being on the heater valve side, that way the valve would be a few degrees cooler. It might last slightly longer.

I like to see your progress as I've thought about doing the same.

thanks, i will just remote that valve.

I have all the wiring worked out.
Engine is sitting where i want it.
I am waiting on some brackets for my motor mounts.
I started working on the exhaust manifold today (that is going to be the hardest part i think.

Yes the exhaust is probably the hardest followed by mixing and matching parts from a 320i 5 speed trans. in order to get the mechanical speedometer to work. I've read somewhere that someone converted the 2002 to rack and pinion, then I think you can use the stock E30 exhaust manifold.

Yes if you use the back end of a 245 2 piece trans you then have a speedo output.

My speedo was way off anyway so I am going to switch to a electric speedo.

I thought about switching to a rack and pinion and that would of actually fixed more than a couple of the problems I have ran into. But I really like the feel of the 2002 steering. And it seems like a hassle to switch to r&p.

So I bought one of those ebay turbo manifolds and I am going to modify it to work with the m42 and see if that will work out. I think it will clear everything. Its worth a shot for $150 shipped.
