I haven't heard anyone talking about the S42 engine in a while so I figured I would stir something up.

I found some pictures on a random German website, I think, it looks like German to me but I'm not sure. http://indirici.net/drag-yarisindan-goruntuler-t2575.html

Here it is, S42 powered carbon fiber bodied (drum roll please)

I thought the S42 was the Touring Car Championship motor for the 3 Series. That requires homologation. Anyone know what, when, where, etc. the homologation models were made and sold.

I thought it was a race only motor and that it was never put into a street car.

E28/34 M5 - S38
E30 M3 - S14
E36 M3 - S50/S52
E39 M5 - S62
E60 M5/6 - S85
E95 M3 - S65

I don't think I'm missing anything.

The s42 was a race engine.
The Lotus shown is a track car.

They had one but didn't add very much power to the stock engine. Boyracer has one this is his web site http://www.jannousiainen.net/hobbies/bmw/e36_318is/index.htm and http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1960

If the S42 is comparably priced to other manufacturers special engines, it probably costs about $20-$25K. I imagine the reason they never updated the head on the M42 for series requiring homologation was Mercedes and the others were using 6 cylinders. I'd love a 180 HP M42 that ran on unleaded. I imagine the reason  was that 2.5 - 3.0 liter 6 cylinders are smoother with more torque. BMW's have become more of a luxury car and the new ones are pretty heavy.
