I am putting on a new catback with a magnaflow muffler. Do I need to include a resonator/silencer to keep the euro sound or will it sound ok without the silencer. I just don't want it to sound all "ricey".

Any suggestions?

You have to keep the cat and the resonator for it to sound good. I havn't hearde one yet that sounded good without them.

Magnaflow cats are a huge part of that ricey sound. Its the way and the material that is used to can them.

The stock resonator right after it with a magnaflow sounds OK. Thats how mine is. Its still a little twangy for me, but I have my car set up for high end HP so I really need the low back pressure.

If you have your car at a more balanced tune, you will want a chambered muffler for sure. So high flow cat, stock resonator and then a dynomax turbo series muffler should sound really good.

Let us know where you end up, what it cost you and how it sounds.

Also, thick gauge exhaust tubing, though heavy, also helps keep the tone low.

pretty sure you would have to purchase the rear section with the resonator and muffler to find one new as it is one solid piece. or you can check around for a used one...

Yeah I have the stock exhaust system. I am going to cut out the resonator/silencer and re-use it after cleaning it up. Will the placement of the resonator make a difference in the sound. Like between putting it in the stock poition or moving it closer to the muffler?

USE A RESONATOR AND CAT. Holy Bavarian Jesus, it sounds like sh*t without. I went 2 days with just a muffler and wanted to shoot myself for being a failure. It sounds like a pile of dying cats being screwed by ricer fanatics. I put the new cat in the factory position and the res a little closer to the muffler and it sounds nice. Sounded "ok" with just cat and muffler, but just not quite the right tone.

Edit: I used generic parts from the local speedy muffler shop. Worked out fine, and less than half the cost of any cat back system I have seen.

I have an aftermarket stainless cat-back with a magnaflow muffler with no silencer that I inherited from the prev own. It's louder than stock and throaty with no vuvuzela ricey buzz or fart. It sounds like a BMW.

They had an unbranded universal 2.25 cat in stock. Don't take it to a midas or anything, but grab the phonebook and call around, the ones that don't speak english so well were the ones that helped me. Did a decent job, and got it done quick. I went with their crappy muffler and I'm not totally happy with the tone, but I think I'm gonna try out the flowmaster 60 series. How is the tone from the magna? Mines dd and I don't want any drone.

My cat is now welded in place, but they did have the flanges to weld on if needed.

I replaced a poorly re-done exhaust on mine (no cat, no resonator, and a fart can) with a magnaflow univ cat, a universal resonator in the middle and a dynomax super turbo muffler. It sounds great! And best part, very little rice! Every once in a while I catch a slight rasp to it, but not enough to bother me (especially after experiencing that fart can on there....)

What size resonator did you get and where did you get it from? My m10 resonator plus a magnaflow stainless muffler has been an embarrassment since the first time I heard an outside video at an autocross.

I'm not exactly sure what the muffler shop put in there. Next time I lift it up I'll take a peek at it and see what it is.
