i decided to join m42club since it will probably be more helpfull since i dont have the necessary M20 for bimmerforums' egos
i was born five years before my bmw, in Montreal Canada
i'm therefor a frenchie (please excuse my bad english if ever that occurs)
now studying at Unversit� de Montr�al
i'm developing bmw junkie habits, like spontaneously buying old ones, although i dont have the money.
i now own a 318is- brilliantrot on black recaro.
everything is stock but the CAI
since i bought it for 800$ in July07 i changed, the alternator,fuel pump, the water pump, thermostat, tie-rod and other things i dont remember about.
the car has 153 000km
although it has a low millage its already rusty due to the amount of salt we put on our roads in Quebec..

i'm saving up to redo a complete paint body work (keeping it brilliantrot) next summer. i will also put a lowered suspension, replace all the bushings at the same time. and refresh the interior.

i used to live in British Columbia for a while and i miss it terribly so i want to go back as soon as i finish university so i have to make the car as reliable as possible so i can do the 5000km in 3 days to get there and pass the emission tests. i will also go to California a few times so this car will be my home.

any suggestions on what to verify and replace to make this car bulletproof would be highly appreciated.
i'm thinking about a complete engine rebuild and replacing the aging differential, fuel lines, coolant and vacuum hoses, radiator, battery, wipers linkage, fan blower, check brake lines, replace brake rotors and maybe.. maybe calipers (if i have the money for brembos)

this car is not going to be used on track although i will use it for spirited driving and hill climbs, after all its a bmw

well i'll quit it here, hope you guys will help me out throughout the process of restoring this old E30. i'll keep it up to date and post pictures

pretty nasty, but for a first bmw, 800$ for a good project, i can't complain

WOW DUDE...

You could have picked up a 318is stateside for the same price and it would have been in MUCH better condition than that.

I would not spend a dime on that car...

If the interior is nice, save it for another E30 but this would be a waste of money man.

thanks but the car is a project, i want to learn how to do the body, i already changed the fenders, and the rust you see is all there is and doesnt affect the frame's solidity. my brother can do the welding for me and i have to say that the mechanic is pretty solid anyways. maybe you can have an e30 for the same price in better condition in the states but then i'd have to pay import taxes and make sure it passes the safety saaq test which i doubt any 800$ 318 would pass

Nice ride. Congrats! That doesn't look too bad for $800. A new fender and sanding is all I see a problem with. Not too hard to fix. You should love driving it.

. Still need to fix the rust on the front lower fenders, though, because that can spread to the firewall/framereails etc.

i'm planing on stripping it down, sand and repaint in July, i'm taking a month and half off before the university starts and spend it on learning everything about the car. maybe an engine rebuild at the same time, so i'd take it out so i can easily repaint the engine bay at the same time. i'd rather spend some time and do a proper job. as i said i need to make sure the car is bulletproof before i finish university so i can go back to british columbia. i'll post pictures of the whole process and comment on it so it might be motivating for others with similar projects

the inside is great. theres only a little rust on my the seats rails, the glove box is missing and the clock is missing too and the leather from the shifter is fading. but theres no cracks on the windshield and only 2 or 3 cracks on the leather seats. i'm going to refinish it because i'm pretty sure there's a hole inside the floor on the driver's side and because i want to know how everything is built as well. i'll post some pictures when i find a camera.
