Speedometer still not working?
« on: October 31, 2007, 10:32:14 PM »
I got a new cluster installed today, it's definitely working better than my previous one, but the real reason why I changed it, my speedometer not working, is not fixed...

I understand the sensor could be the problem, even though the PO said he changed it, I'll try getting a new one.

But I was wondering, could it be some cable that transmits the signal from the sensor to the speedometer itself? Anybody has experience with that cable?

check to see if your speed sensor is plugged in the diff.

It could be the wire, i'd check the sensor first.

Well, the sensor definitely looks... old? The bracket holding it is pretty much just a piece of rust... The wire itself appears to have been spliced before and has electrical tape connecting all the wires together... So... Should I just change everything? :P I didn't see the wire for sale anywhere though.

I had the same problem, to verify what was involved I removed the cover under the steering so I have access to the lug behind the cluster.  When the speed odometer would drop off while I am driving I would reach underneat and play with the plug, I think it's the white one.  anyway whenever I would do that it would work again.  so I replaced the cluster with another I had for spare.  that fixed the problem.  You might want to check that plug.  The new one you installed.  Was it new or from a junkyard?

The cluster, I ordered from German eBay, has around 180k km on it and seems to work very fine. The plugs that go in the back I left the same. Plus, it never worked since I got the car, not like yours which sometimes did and sometimes didn't...

Basically, what doesn't work is the speedometer, the odometer and the mileage estimator. Every other gauge works perfectly, even the service indicator (half of things didn't work with the old cluster, so I'm still happy with the purchase).
