During my (almost complete) engine swap, I discovered this item hanging in the engine bay.
Anyone know what it is and where it's supposed to be attached?

It's supposed to be attached between the intake and that black canister (don't know the english word for it)

right under the air flow meter.

purge valve for the evap system, it puts a vacuum on the fuel tank

yup thats exactly right, its the purge valve. It plugs into the hose coming from the tank and then into the charcoal canister. FYI if you unplug the wires you will get a CEL.

If you don't have the carbon canister anymore just plug the hose up with a screw or something otherwise the engine will run like crap because it would be a vacuum leak.

it can do your engine no harm if it isnt attached, so as asubimmer says mine is also vented to the atmosphere...

So, are you guys basically unplugging the engine side and plugging the hose end, and just leaving the cannister outlet open to the atmosphere? Or do you need to plug it? Can someone give me some info on how they are bypassing the thing?

I am hunting vacuum leans, and one potential spot it the 1-way valve being shot. Forget dropping $72 on a new one.
