so the E36 steering rack is quicker? That's cool. The steering on my car is a bit light, and not always to my taste.

I've got power steering. Not as communicative, but I guess the ratio is a bit quicker than E30's w/out power assist. I'll have to look into deleting the power steering (and the AC while I'm at it..)

Like I said, nonsense.

You can go do without most of the stuff he mentions.

I simply swapped my old rack out with this one.

You will need E36 inner and outer tie rods though...they're beefier as well :)

All of this confusion about doing the e36 rack install is what steered me back to the stocker.  I could never find matching write-ups.  I don't have any e30 enthusiasts locally to compare mods/ideas with and to physically check out mods with.

At least one e30 is dry underneath now.  Time to replace all the seals in the m20 beater now.  My driveway was recently sealed and Mrs. m42 isn't liking the leaking e30s too much:rolleyes::p

OK, I guess I will take the plunge and do it.  My parts list on BMA is the following.  Is it all correct?

Maval Rebuilt rack for 1995 M3
Left Tie Rod Ends + Ball Joints for 1995 M3
Right Tie Rod Ends + Ball Joints for 1995 M3
2 x Boots for 1995 M3
2 x Lock Plates for 1995 M3
2 x Clamps for 1995 M3

From Pelican I will be getting:
New PS fluid resivoir
New pump belt

Forget the new high-pressure line.  Mine doe snto seem to be leakign, and for some reason the M42's costs $240, while the other E30 ones are like $60.  As for the other low pressure lines, I will just get some generic hose from the local parts store and clamp the hose ends into them.

Am I missing anything?

Where are you purchasing the rack from?

Take look into those spacers btw...

Sorry for the confusion with the info I posted. All of the writeups on this that I have ever seen required firewall mods. I know that the original high pressure line can be used, but I thought that the fittings were the wrong size...An interesting point is that most of those writeups were on bf.c ... ;). Turns out they also dealt with an airbag e30 M3, so that might be part of it too.

hope I didn't cause any undue problems...

I would guess that I need 2?  Do they go between the subframe and rack?

And yay for having an engine hoist.  I can probably avoid bending the mount tabs.

I got a hubbys laptop in a similar way.
Free, well it cost me 10 minutes of work on her computer. 2 year old refurb'ed Sony laptop ($3000 when new).

Also scored my Miata that way $500. It had to go.

A buddy scored a NICE 64' Cuda for $12k that way as well.

A lot of places will not give you a core for the wrong rack.
Try the place linked in the start of this, they are so much cheaper you may not miss out on the money without ever sending one back.
