TMS J Stock Suspension on a M42?
« on: October 03, 2007, 07:11:43 AM »
Okay so after doing a lot of shopping around and reading on forums about all kinds of suspension setups people are running on their 318's Ive come to the conclusion that I want to try out the J Stock suspension setup from TMS.

Springs: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=TURNER3000

Shocks: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=E30JSTOCKBIL

The problem is though that I have never seen or heard of anyone running their springs and revalved Bilstein shocks so I dont know how the stance will be as compared to that of the m3 that they are truely designed for.

If anyone knows of a link to a thread that can help me out that would be swell. Im on the road a lot working now so I dont really have the time to just "browse" forums like I used to so any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

What's the reason for you wanting the J-Stock kit?

Aesthetics: Your car won't be low as an m3 or 325iS

Performance: Your handling will dramatically improve

Drivability: It was designed for race use. Most can't bear to use it daily. There's a tradeoff for a shock/spring kit designed for a race class that you will use on the street daily.

My friend has been tracking his E30 325 with J-Stock for two years now, it's very good on the track but he finds it very unconfortable on the street. The springs are progressive but they go up to 900lbs in the back if I remember correctly...that's a lot!

The stance is very nice though.

e9nine: I have been looking into stiffer race suspension setups for the pure fact that I dont care how poor the street ride quality of the car is. It is my daily driver as of right now but Im only home and able to drive about 1-2 weeks out of every month. I also guess for the price Im not too worried if I dont like the way it rides on the road.

Silverblades181: Great! Thanks for the input...do you think you could get me pictures of your friends e30 even though its a 325? It would definitely help me make up my mind.

FWIW - the stance on a 325 is never the same as a 318iS due to the weight difference

I have ridden in 325iS  and 318i m10 with J stockers. It's definitely a case of preference. A lot of people say they don't care about ride comfort but it's a relative statement as it comes down to how many miles you drive, the quality of the roads, the dental plan you're on and if you have any gf/wife who rides in the car with you occasionally.

Stiffer isn't always better. Will you be autocrossing or doing HPDEs?

I figured that much but I would still like to see how the 325 sits so I can just imagine where mine should sit taking into consideration the weight difference...and like I stated before Im rarely home now with my new job and Im definitely not married nor do I have a gf due to my travels. Just playmates ;)

Mainly road coarse events in Topeka, Hallet, and other raceways. Im not the biggest fan of autox.

It's a ways off, but I'm about 90% sure that I'll be putting that set up on my car this spring.  Have to get the M42 swap taken care of first though.  :)  I'll report back on my opinions (car will be used for track and DD usage).

Sweet! Well if I end up going with this setup (im having second thought) than I'll let you know what I think!
