E36 M42 tranny and E30 M42 tranny...

Are these two interchangeable?

I looked on realoem, and the e36 transmission looks like its made by ZF?

Does our getrag 240 fit?

Yeh, thats what I was thinking.

I'm just asking because I just sold my 5spd locally to a friend with an E36 M42.

I believe they both bolt the same, but as nick mentioned, the e30 is shorter AFAIK.

well its a turbo, so i'm sure that will be more than welcome...

however, what do you mean by shorter case and different slave?

will he need a longer driveshaft?

Not sure what this...does it mean that it won't work in an e36?

Evrything what is different is interchangeble form E30 gearbox. I driving  E30 318is with gearbox from E36 318is. You will have problems with  crankshaft end bearing (replace with correct) and clutch salave cilinder (rod is too short from E30, mine was custom made)...

Is the "crankshaft end bearing" the pilot bearing? Will the slave cylinder shaft from an e36 work when the e36 tranny is installed in an e30. And just what is a "spiggot shaft". I am getting ready to put an e36 tranny into an e30. Need info.

I dont know.. You can try to install E36 slave cilinder..

Do not forget that you need clutch spring clip and lever from E36 gearbox.

Yes it's the pilot bearing.

I don't think that you can use the E36 slave cylinder shaft only as the complete cylinder has a different design on E36. I have a E36 gearbox in my 318is E30 and I use the complete E36 slave cylinder.

The G240 from my E30 has started whining, probably due to the bearings in the gearbox. Hence, I'm comtemplating whether to put in the E36 Getrag 220 gearbox...

Only concern is the prop shaft. Do I need to change the prop shaft now mated with the E30 Getrag 240 when I put in the Getrag 220??

Do you have any issue with the prop shaft(long shaft) ?? direct fit by using
e36 front & rear long shaft ?
