Drop the diff out, it's not that hard and much easier to work on.

I just replaced the driver's side leaking seal a week ago.  Didn't drop the diff, but dropped the exhaust and then unbolted the axle (6 hex head bolts) at the diff and hung it out of the way.  Toughest part for me was getting the old seal out.  I had two different seal pulling tools, still it was a bee-atch.  Had to get a Dremel in there and mangle it.  Also had to use a hammer handle to free up the hub that inserts into the differential.  Bought a seal from BMA and used a small block of wood to get it started evenly and eventually flush, then a huge rental socket from AutoZone just a hair smaller than the seal diameter to seat it the rest of the way.  Have a couple quarts of Redline 75w90 geal oil on hand and you're set to go.  Be sure to get the correct gear oil for your diff.  There are two types of Redline:  One for Limited Slip and one for not (NS on the bottle.)
