replacing the throttle cable
« on: September 29, 2007, 10:34:01 PM »
hello all,

my throttle cable is essentially broken.  the adjustment pieces arent there, and theres about 1/3 inch of play in the cable.  i've briefly scoured the internet and cannot find any kind of write up, and i cant find my bentley, and the chilton i got doesnt mention it at all.

i understand how it connects to the pedal, but which way do i pull the old one out?  are there tricks for getting it through the firewall?  if i have trouble getting the old one off i could just cut it, but i dont want to do that until i know for sure that i can put the new one on.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Its really easy, I just did mine.

The cable just pulls off the pedal, that is obvious.

Look at the clip on the new cable where it snaps into the firewall. I like to use long reach needle nose to compress the clip on the old cable. Once it snaps free (or often breaks as its fragile with age) just pull the cable through the firewall from the engine side, disconnect everything at the throttle body and then install the new cable.

thanks, i actually overlooked one of the adjustment pieces and figured out how to tighten it.  i thought the adjustment piece would be in the same place as the M20, but it wasnt.

i still dont see how one can get the cable through the firewall though without taking out a few different things, like the fusebox.

do bmw dealerships usually take returns on parts?  i have an extra throttle cable now...

You need not remove anything other then the panel that covers the area abobe the pedals.

Most dealers will take returns, but nail you with a restock fee.
