Idle question
« on: September 17, 2007, 03:37:32 AM »
First off I'd like to say hi to everybody as this is my first post.

Now for the matter at hand. I noticed that the hoses running to the icv were all in bad shape and needed replacing (the car however was running like a top). The strange thing now is that when I started the car after, it would not hold an idle and died. I tried it a few times just turning the key and got the same result each time. Now if I start it and then tap the gas a few times it will after a few seconds idle just fine. This only happens when the car is first started and will start just fine after driving as little as a block. While I was changing the water pump and thermostat this weekend (great links found here for the how to), I looked for anything that I may have knocked loose during the hose replacement but couldn't see anything obvious. I did clean out the icv at the same time I changed the hoses (as described by others here), and used all oem parts. I'd love it if anyone has an idea as to what it may be. This is more of a minor annoyance and doesn't seem to affect drivability at all, but would like to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any help guy's.

If you do not completely dry out the ICV, if will give you trouble holding idle. I had that problem before when I cleaned mine out.

Just make sure that it is completely dry inside and the valve itself can move very freely.

I'll pull it off and make certain it's dry and let you know.

Thanks, Michael

I took the icv off and sprayed it out with brake clean and then left it out to dry for 24hrs before I tried it again. The results are marginally better but it will still stall out although it hesitates a tic or to before it does, which it did not do the first time. So unless anyone can think of another cause, I figure I'll just get a new one.

get a propane torch, and without lighting the flame, just turn the gas on, run it by all your vacuum lines moving them around. If your idle picks up then you have a vacuum leak, if not the its time to move onto either the MAF or the ICV. perhaps you over tightened a hose clamp or forgot a hose clamp and your leaking there...

Thanks for the tips guys. I picked up another icv at the "junkyard" while picking up a factory airbox and it took care of the problem.
