Author Topic: Propshaft centre bearing question (Read 3225 times)

After splitting the prop shaft and removing the circlip and dustguard does the centre bearing just slide out or do I need a puller or something? doesn't seem to want to come but haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

You can use a puller to get the bearing off the prop shaft, or use a drift or screwdriver and lightly tap them with a hammer to work the bearing off the shaft. Just make sure you keep moving the drift or screwdriver around the entire bearing.

I used hammer and screw driver and it worked great.

Just don't forget to preload the bearing, otherwise you will be back under there in about a month.

Forgive my ignorance here, but what exactly do you mean by preload? I am going to have to perform this operation soon.

Pull the CSB back so that there is tension on the bearing making it not want to move all around.

Sorry Kind of hard to explain

Basically
1. Grab the metal piece that connects to the rubber (after it is already reinstalled under the car and the only thing left to do is connect the 2 screws.
2. Pull back approx 2-3in
3. lock it down tight

You just dont want the drive shaft to be able to move up and down alot while spinning (tears aparth the rubber peice and is the reason for replacement). When you pull back on it it stretches the rubber and the DS cannot bounce around

Thanks. I picked up a bentley with the parts. That job is a done deal. Now to figure why my fuel pump crapped out.
