The previous owner put in a new cat, and I highly doubt that it is a very good, high-flow one. Also, my piping and resonator are from a Bosal exhaust, also from the PO. The pipes look the same as stock, but the resonator is significantly smaller. I'm fairly sure it would be quieter with the stock resonator.
At little throttle inputs, it is actually quite quiet, especiallty if it is kept under 2500 RPM or above 3000 RPM. I drove for about 2 hours on the highway with it, and it can get annoying when going uphill. There is a *tiny* bit of drone at 3k RPM/60-65 mph that is probably due to the resonator. I know this all sounds bad, but you get used to it, and the highway noise isn't bad if there is music playing.
I got quite a few complements on it at the last bmwcca autox, so some people like it. In fact, I have a video
here. Gotta love E30 slow steering. I also pulled off the shift knob twice during this run
