Hardwiring a radar detector
« on: September 07, 2007, 07:35:26 AM »
Hi everyone,

Hope all are doing well since I've been on last? I looked through the first 2 pages of the electrical threads and I didn't notice anything that jumped out at me regarding the request above (so I apologize ahead of time for the assailng of deceased equines).

I notice that the fuse box has one or two open circuits (nothing is operated by those spaces). Has anyone over hardwired anything (particularly a radar detector, but anything will work for suggestions) into the fuse box? I was going to check how much the detector drew (since it runs off the cigarette lighter, it probably takes a few amps) and try to hardwire it in there.

Am I correct in thinking its easy as 1-2-3? Just disconnect the negative, undo the fuse box from the body and connect the positive and negative wires and input a properly amped fuse (ex. 7.5, 10, etc.)?

I need to get some nice pics for you guys from my finished project from the past few months as well. I'll try to remember to get some this weekend (if I can also find the wire that lets me download images onto the computer, that would be great too.)

Nope, not that easy. This is the bottom of the fuse box:

You should have a small auxiliary fuse box off to the side that you can use, though.

This one isn't wired into the fuse box but would probably work for you.
Good luck, Dan.

there are other ways to hardwire a radar, and still have it look and function profesionally. For example you could run a relay off of the radio "turn-on" wire and run a fused link to the detector (there are many other ways to, going off the fuse box is probabally your most difficult way).
