Flat or glossy ;red or black?
« on: August 25, 2007, 02:15:41 PM »
Hello all!

I think that You all know my car... After a long while, I will finally paint it and I've got the question how to do it..

As it will reach about 400HP's it should look very special...

And the question is:
1. flat black
2. flat red
3. glossy black
4. glossy red

Anyway it will have black shadowline and black glossy rims black front and rear lights...

Call me old-fashioned, but flat is only for primer.  I really love red cars, but they show up too easily as blurs to law enforcement.

there was a rattle canned flat-black car at bimmerfest here in cali, didnt look as cool as i thought it would, but maybe if you put some rattle-can clear coat on top of the black it might look pretty good.

If you go with black, I'd suggest not making it flat, but a semi-gloss. It'll hold its look better, flat black is not smooth so it's like a chalkboard and shows everything. Semigloss, like SEM paint would add the flat look but it would look classy, like you meant to do it instead of you just have a rustbucket with primer on it.

Also, I'd consider some glossy areas like a subtle stripe or highlight pinstripe or something. THis would set it off well and make it look finished and purposeful.

Good luck

nomad - I fully agree with You!

As I've painted the trunk completely flat /with flat clearcoat on it/ I've realised that it will look much better to be semi gloss. So I've painted my sunroof semiflat and it is still too flat as I think...

So when talking about flat black I actually think about satined black... Of corse I don't want to have my car with a look of primer :-)

About the stripes. - I don't like theese Viper stripes going through the car, but I wanted to paint glossy:

-rims
-headlight grates
-oilcooler grate
- shadowline
- rear spoiler
- low spoilers /I've bought oryginal BMW set - the one from convertible/

But it seems that I'll have to make some tries with my fenders painting them with just a little flat in the clearcoat to leave them quite glossy. I've spend some time to find sport cars painted flat and the one which was looking the best was Ferrari 308 with as I think about 70% of glossyness... By comparison - normally You have 100% and I've painted my trunk 10%...

Good choices all but, IMHO Glossy Red.

My brother is a cop and they call red, "give me a ticket red."  However, he says black is the hardest to see from a distance.  Guess the question for you is, "do you feel lucky?"

You have to do it right if you do it.  It can't be a "tape everything you don't want painted, shake can, and spray".  Good prep work will make it look good, along with a good even spray

for example take a look at my DIY thread, but generally I was aiming this kind of appearance:
