Transmission ?
« on: August 17, 2007, 04:59:08 PM »
At any given time, hot or cold, it is very difficult to get into first gear and reverse. It is like the clutch isn't fully disengaging so it doesn't want to slip into gear. Yet every other gear, while moving, is good. The clock has 222k on it and the trans is original. I don't know if it has ever been rebuilt or not. The clutch looked fine when I reinstalled the trans after rebuilding the motor.

Is it my pressure plate or trans?

MTF not ATF. Tried ATF and Redline ATF for 2000 miles and it felt horrible so I switched back to MTF.

Oh.  I didn't think ATF was okay to put in these trannies.  Hopefully that didn't do anything to precipitate your problem.

I use Redline MTL in mine.  It was very tough to shift when cold and sometimes when hot before I switched.  It's fine now, hence my question.

Do you have a short throw shift kit installed?  If so that will make it harder to get it into certain gears and make it notchy.

Mine is very hard to get into first at times when the tranny is cold and I am stopped. If I shift into second and then into first (still stopped) it will go in much better. once the tranny is warm, it shifts pretty well. Similar problem? My guess is my synchros are wearing out...

A local rebuilder here in town told me the labor was $200-$225 because there was a lot more press work involved in 240 and 260 Getrags. He also said that the only ones he ever rebuilds (Getrags) are for Dodge trucks and the like. Most 240 and 260's are just swapped for used ones. Does anyone know of an actual rebuild? How much did it cost? Most of them I've encountered were simply clutch replacements by people who weren't clear jobs  on the terminology.

Yes I have a short shift, which I know is notchy. Gearhead, I'm having the same problem as you.

D. Clay, From what I understand, it isn't that difficult to rebuild the trans. However you need know the exact order of the syncro, washers and gears as you put it back together. The best way is to take picture before and as you take it apart. The hard part would be to find the syncros and washers.

1991, would engine mounts really cause this issue?

Sounds like synchro's, dogs or a bent selector rod. Did it get worse after the short shift kit was installed?

Could also be a dragging clutch - try to changes gears with the engine off to see if it improves.

right on the nose.
here's a litle test to see if it is a dragging clutch/pilot bearing.

1. start the engine
2.push the clutch in and hold it and put the transmission in first gear (make sure it is fully in first gear)
3.put the transmission back in neutral and let the clutch out
4.push the clutch in and hold it, and try to put the transmission into reverse.

If it grinds or makes a rattling noise or clunks very loud into reverse then the pilot bearing/bushing is dry and sticking. If it doesn't make any noise and is just difficult to engage the gears then I would suspect the synchros.

I couldn't find any bearing/seal Kits to rebuild Getrags in older BMW's. only individual parts from the dealer$hip.
