Sheared off selector rod.
« on: August 16, 2007, 12:18:40 PM »
A day ago I was at the mall visiting my girlfriend at work, during my exit of the parking lot my shifter seemed like it was stuck and didn't want to go out of 2nd gear. The day before I noticed that it didn't have its usual 2 clicks into 3rd gear like it does every other gear. It would simply slide easily all the way forward where it would stay in 3rd. Well, after fiddling with the shifter I pulled the rubber boot up and realized that my selector rod had completely sheared off, the long shaft that runs from where the rod connects to the tranny to where the pin secures it in the lever was completely severed. This allows the shift lever to turn a completely 360 degrees. I had to leave the car at the mall overnight and get a ride home. Yesterday I rode back up, jacked up the car jammed the selector rod into what I thought was 3rd gear, and I was on my way. It turns out the car was in 4th gear, making it very difficult to get moving without smoking the clutch. I got the car home and here I sit pondering what I should go about doing to fix the car. I have the part number, but I was curious if it was a part I could get easily locally. Is the part rather easy to remove, it doesn't look too bad? There isn't enough of the small end of the sheared rod to have it welded so that isn't an option. Any ideas guys?

Wow.  Time to crack open the case.

Hopefully it's the cheaper one.

Are you talking about #11 in the photo? or the selector rod that goes into the tranny?
Doubt even a dealer would stock any of the parts.

I have a couple of number 11's also. If you want to drive out to Chesapeake, you can have it.

very comon problem, ive seen #1 in the pic break also, or, if your lucky like me, the bracket (wich is part of the tranny back plate) which holds #1 in place on the tranny broke on me.

replace all the bushings while your in there to, it will  make the shifter nice a tight......like a virgin :p.

Yes it is part number 11 in the photo shown. Check your PM Wise Old Dog. I think your son said he had an intake boot with my name on it for $10. Thanks guys.
