Speedometer rarely working. Sensor?
« on: August 01, 2007, 01:20:02 PM »
Hey guys the speedometer on my car rarely works. IT starts back up after i drive it for about 30min to an hour. The previous owner said he checked the cluster and its fine. Said its almost positively the speed sensor thats located on top of the differential. Anyone clarify this. If it is that, what part # is that? The BMW service dealer parts guy told me its # 62 16 8 355 008. I read in a different thread on here that it could be # 61 13 0 007 445.
Any ideas?

Check the wires to the speed sensor first - they are known (by me and one or two others anyway) to corrode; first you get an intermittent connection, then they stop working entirely. I don't have my database with me (I'm on vacation), but if you still need it when I return next week, I can put up the part numbers for the wires.

A freind's 318is had the problem with the wiring breaking just near the connector on the back of the differential. When we tried to pull the connector off the wires just came apart which made the problem very obvious. Fixed by soldering back together.
