M42 build questions
« on: July 30, 2007, 06:46:40 PM »
I will be tearing an M42 apart soon as I would have gotten one from someone in the area. I want to do a complete rebuild, but I was thinking - if i am in there, why not make it produce a bit more power? What would you guys recommend? I dont have much experience with the BMW 4-bangers...

I could do an SC or a turbocharger setup, or just leave it NA and run a different set of cams/crank, and would the two cases be any different?

Thank you all.

It all depends what you are willing to spend for "a bit more" power. If you are hoping for more than 160+whp, then you might be better off going F/I or swapping a larger 6-cyl in. These options can get complicated and expensive a lot quicker and I would not recommend them.

If you enjoy the balance of the car with a 4-cyl like I do and just want more pep, you can always get some cylinder head work done/cams/lightened M20 flywheel/shorter ratio differential. A hardcore option is to do the M47/M44 crank in conjunction with S50/M3 pistons along with all the listed items above.

I bought the 318is for balance, not brute power. The M42 is a worthy investment if you just want to liven it up. But do not expect it to have much torque or large power gains per dollar. However, with very few mods it's very possible to make higher-class/overpriced cars feel terrible at the track when they point-by a 1.8L POS. Just ask 2002maniac what I mean by this...

I would suggest some more cost effective/fun modifications. Investigate getting a lightweight M20 flywheel, a less restrictive muffler, chip, track-oriented suspension, and a bucket racing seat with a steering wheel. This will net you a lot more fun points when driving spiritedly. You get to full-throttle when exiting most corners at the track. To me, that's more fun than having 300+whp and being at 1/4 throttle all the time.

That sounds like a good idea. I wanted to use an M44 crank with S50 pistons as a matter of fact (I will get a second motor and have it sit in the garage) I wanted to spend like $1k on a motor (hard to say anything at this point as I have virtually no money left after all these parts (suspension + motor)) But I will eventually get it, and I just want to do it right the first time. Megasquirt the motor, M44 crank, S50 pistons, some advanced cams, that about takes care of the most mods that can be done to the motor. I could do ITBs and I was actually considering it, but I know for a fact that  I will not be able to buy ITBs right away, so maybe after megasquirt is running on the car, I can tune it accordingly for the ITBs later on.

Basically what I want to have is a car that will handle really awesome (almost done ;) and will produce a decent amount of power) - I am shooting for an S50 stock motor kind of power, but as I have not been tuning cars yet, I am completely making those numbers up - as a matter of fact, the car itself is a way for me to learn to work on the advanced things in cars. I have done headgaskets, seals on motors before, but I have yet to try to create my own fuel injection system, but I am an engineer with free time this summer - so sky is the limit for like 3 weeks right now :)
