What The Fcuk?!?!?!
« on: July 28, 2007, 06:36:19 PM »
Man I was pissed in disbelief. What a prick.

oh yeah...some little munchkin dude failed my baby's SMOG check because of this...

Yeah that little hose (don't know the exact name) has a tear. So in his world I fail the SMOG check because that little hose will dramatically increase air pollution and aid in global warming!

Oh yeah, I had some black tape neatly covering it up and he tore ot off and said that was illegal?!

Holy shit.  I just passed at a test-only center with my MAF conversion on there and everything.  Conforti chip & COP ignition too lol.  Find a different shop, well and replace that hose.

Most of the shops I know of around here would also fail you for a big vacuum leak like that. Maf conversions and COP are harder for them to spot simply because it doesn't look broken. But every time I've had a smog check, they were in there with a flash light checking every vacuum hose. Its just the way it is around here. Visual sucks.

I'm trying to do my TB coolant bypass plus mustang injectors and just found 4 vacuum hoses with over 10 cracks each under the upper intake manifold. I guess my high rpm pinging problem is going to be solved! Funny the car passed test only with no problems!

Well, I have to go to this guy again. He charged me $48 for the test and since HE failed me the retest is free but when I pass Ill have to pay like $8.75 for the certificate. Basically, there is no way I am going to let him keep the $48. He WILL pass me.

Iam definitelly not going there ever again. I usually have a place to go to but I was in a hurry. All I was trying to do was give him business since it always looks empty.

The rip is nothing. No vacuum leak. The part that is ripped is the one that goes over the hose coming from the intake. So everything is sealed.

What also pissed me off is when he was like, "wow it's a 1991 and that's the only problem". Freaking prick.

I think you are overreacting a bit - this could cause a very weak mixture, but could have been sorted on the spot.

The hose in that picture is a single wall hose and its ripped. The piece you see inside is the 90 degree elbow coming off the intake tube. The guy is just doing his job. If your car was a surprise test vehicle from the state (they get those about twice a year) and he didn't catch it he could get a fine or worse lose his license. Any other shop would have failed you with something like that. My advice is to replace the hose (its a $1 length at any auto parts store) and go back for your $48 smog check if they offer a free retest.

He probably didn't have a good enough look underneath the intake. Chances are you have a couple of dozen more vac leaks he didn't catch.  After 17 years most M42s look like this.

that really sucks! Around here they dont really care...Ive had friends go to get their car inspected and the guys just ask what year, make, model their cars are...walk around their cars and then just say "okay your good to go" haha

Missouri is pretty pathetic!

Thats funny because in California there is no car inspection. Only smog. They couldn't care less about safety. But heaven forbid if you happen to have a tiny vacuum leak or decided to install an aftermarket intake. The whole weight of the State of California will come down on you like a ton of bricks. Idiotic system.

The 90 degree elbow coming off the intake goes in the ripped tube and goes past the ripped part. Thats why in the picture you see the tube inside reflecting and not just a hole there which would make that spot dark black.

I understand he is doing his job but that is rediculous. Any other shop would pass me and tell me to change the hose either because there is a leak or there will be soon.

Looking under my intake would find no vacuum leaks. My baby was well taken care of. Just the visual inspection of my car took that munchkin 5-10 minutes. He had a flashlight and a mirror on a retractable antenna like stick. The ONLY "problem" he found was this hose. And the only reason it is cracked is because the elbow tube coming off the intake was twisted in the wrong direction. Once I twist it to the proper direction the crack is not even visible.

My point. That dude is an ass.
