Ok well I need to do a water pump swap on the ol' vert'. I haven't done one on a M42 yet (although I have on m20's) What can I expect time wise, difficulty, etc??? Any tips you have that can save me time for "other" stuff is great ;)

Easy job. Use the 2 threaded holes on the pump flange to screw 2 of the mounting bolts into. This forces the pump out of the block. Use equal pressure on each bolt or you will break the flange. Not a big deal, but more hassle if you break it. Make sure you clean out the housing with a wire brush and wipe it down good to get any particles out. I used dielectric silicone grease to lube the big "O" ring, or you could use vasoline. Helps to install it, seal it, and it will be easy to remove next time. Oh, you also need a wrench to get the fan off with. I used a large cresent wrench. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. I have both the fan wrench and the pully hold tool, So I should be all set. Soinds like it's easier then the m20 WP change.

Not trying to scare you but most people call the m42 water pump replacement the hardest. I have done 3 with no negative outcomes.

However, I did take my time when it came to the most important/difficult part - getting the pump off the block. I had to "tap" mine off as the screw/bolt method didn't work for me. A lot of people I know had to use extreme measures to get theirs off as well. A few weeks ago, while helping a buddy do his, it took as quite some time to get the pump off even though the motor was out of the car and on a stand!

Just be patient and tactical about it.

Good luck!

Agreed.  I got mine out by tightening each screw a quarter turn at a time, with a round of tapping in between.  Even so, one of the flanges broke off on mine before the pump finally came free.

Be deliberate and take your time.

Thanks for the tips, Maybe I should go and spray down the front of the engine down w/ degreeser or some PB blaster in advance. Its gonna be a day or two till I get to the change.

I'm curious how this went for you.  I plan to be doing the same very soon.  Love these forums... cuz the bentley says NOTHING about tapping and such (and I still dont knoww hat you're referring to, but I imagine I will when I dive in there).  I think it just says 'remove the bolts and remember where you pulled them from' or something like that.

It pretty much goes as they said, and one of the bolts is an allen head, so remember which hole it is in. use two of the socket bolts in the flange to press the pump out. Mine didn't need any tapping, but I had to pull very hard to get it out. Make sure that you pull it out straight, or it won't come out at all. My pump had about a quart of coolant behind it, even after I drained the system. Be ready for a bit of a waterfall.
