BMW water pumps are notoriously failure-prone. I'd replace them every 2-3 years if the car is driven often.

They are? Ours have metal impellers, right? I've just had good experiences with them, I would expect at least 100k miles out of a OEM pump, they're just so simple. Only the plastic impeller ones found in a lot of E36s sucked, then I'd agree, every couple of years.

my bad, I just looked into it more, our cars have pretty good pumps. It is the e36 ones that sucked so bad. I'd only swap it if you have been having other problems with the cooling system.

Hm...i've recently changed the water pump on my daily driver (VW Golf IV TDI) and i've noticed that ever since the water needle is sitting about 1mm cooler.

Can that happen to our E30's also?

If You remove the visco system - and install electric fan, not only You get more horsepower, but the waterpump lasts much longer...

But generally - keep new waterpump in the trunk and change it when the old one starts to leak

I've got a/c also, what if i take the viscous system out and leave only the a/c fan? It starts at 91 degrees step 1 and 99 step 2.

I'm sorry - I don't have any experience with A/C... But I'm pretty sure that it won't work with coolant because it is launched because of high A/C system temperature, not by coolant temperature...
