You americans did not get all possible engines.I suppose you have not heard E34 bodied 518I either...

In european market car taxation varies quite a lot in different countries, so some high taxation countries had cars available with smaller engines, models like E30 316I, E34 518I etc, etc. I have owned a E30 with M40 1,6L engine, badged as 316I. I bought it new back in 1989. It cost then 102000 finnish marks, about 18000€. During that time 325I cost over 200000 FIM, over 35000€. Also 318IS cost then over 30K€, so you see why there were also smaller engines available.

People are also a bit suprised when they hear that the Euro markets got an e36 323ti hatch and that there was an e46 hatch called merely the "compact." I belive this is also the reason that certain markets got the 320is with the S14 in it.

BTW some family members had a 518i with a manual, I heard its a pretty decent, if slow, car.

Also 320IS was made because high taxes. They were available only in Italy (where most of them were sold) and in Portugal. That S14 was just under 2.0L with 192hp. They made it just under 2,0 L because in Italy & Portugal you must pay higher taxes of the vechiles which has lager than 2.0L engine.

I have looked for a suitable 320IS from Italy and i am negotiating just now with the owners. I found two very good canditates. They only problem is Italians usually do not speak/write any other lanquages than Italian... I can hardly manage poorly with Finnish, Swedish,German,English and French:p I suppose i have to learn a little bit Italian as well.;)
The price range of these 320IS models are between 4000-9000€'s depending on model year and the conditition of car.

E36 Compact was quite popular here in Finland. It was imported only with 1,6L engine. Bigger engines were not available officially. E46 Compact was not so popular here, because it was quite expensive and people bought rather "normal" bodied E46's
