Just a theory I have...going out to test mine now...mine normally sits at 1/4 cold but I've read people who did thermostats that it gets to 1/2 on coolant gauge.

Can someone time theirs for me at idle?

Mine sat at 1/4 but I put new SI board batteries in and now it reads 1/2. The thermostat housing read 190 with a  surface pyrometer before and after.

Wow, so SI battery can actually dictate the accuracy or effectiveness of the gauge??

Wow so now my solution map will look like this..

1.) replace SI board battery, test gauge if still reading 1/4 at operating temp
2.) replace thermostat, check spark plug condition, replace if necessary, if that doesnt fix issue then back to drawing board...

in case you think these are the ramblings of a madman...im referencing my problem here..

mine sits at 1/4 as well. The family E34 gets up to 1/2 in less then half the time it takes mine to get to 1/4 though, so I think I may need a new t-stat. When in doubt, hit the dash above the gauge and it may move a bit to a different reading ;)

Mine also sat at 1/4 until I changed my t-stat....Now it takes around 5-7 minutes (of driving) to reach the 1/2 mark. I removed my fan and clutch though and I just use the aux A/C fan for cooling. My water pump is also fairly new.

Mine is between a 1/4 & 1/2 with a new stat. It takes about 5 or so min.
