Chip needs what octane?
« on: June 06, 2007, 12:47:26 PM »
I only have 91 octane around here in Cali and have been using it in my stock car.

I have yet to figure out if I can use 89 (87 is the lowest here). I'm afraid of using 89 since if there is a problem we don't have knock sensors.

What I read is that the chips require a bump in octane and I've seen conflicting info. Some articles said "must now use 91". Others on here say 93 is the min.

It's near impossible here to find anythign above 91 and this is my daily.

Care to enlighten me?

I thought that m42's need to run on 91 octane already without the chip?

You should be running 91 regardless as that is what the factory states but I've seen people run less. I would think the octane would be especially important in areas where there are elevation changes like Cali.

As for chips, there are 91 and 93 oct chips available. Some of the generic chips might require 92 or 93 even though specified for 91 due to the less than optimized tuning maps that might be running on the ragged edge.

So the car calls for 91, (listed only as "premium" on the door sticker) and there are chips which are tuned for use with 91 octane?

Yes and yes. MarkD, Dinan, and other variants.

I don't think anyone else make a 93 octane chip do they?

Alpine003, I just spent 1 week in Chicago and returned to Toronto last night. (I stayed at my cousins place not for from Wolfram/Hermitage ).  Are you anywhere around downtown?

Yes, I'm 2 minutes west of Downtown Loop. Just far enough where I can have my own garage without sharing it with others. ;) Next time, give me a shout so I can put you to work. haha.
