I'm in trouble. MAJOR steering rack LEAK...PICS
« on: April 08, 2006, 01:17:07 PM »
I'm getting some leakage into the passsenger side boot. I guess my steering rack is in big trouble. I removed the steel clamp and realigned the rubber washer at the end of boot. Zip tied it and as expected, it fills with fluid and slips back into the boot again. I REALLY don't mind driving without the power steering. Can I disable the power steering pump so when the fluid runs out, it doesn't suck air and make so much noise. Is another rack my only option? One last question, are other e30 racks compatible with our cars?

You can buy a seal kit, part number 32131132798 I believe.  Not much fun to do the work, but it's that or buy a new rack. You could take this opportunity to convert to the Z3 rack, but you'll need to modify your firewall for that.

^^^^Sweet. No power steering belt it is!! I've been looking for an excuse to get rid of the PS(even if it is temporary). I'm used to autocrossing 2002's<---no power steering there!! So one thing that has bothered me since I got my 318is is the lack of direct feel when steering. Should I at least run ATF through it occasionally? Wont it freeze up or something, if I don't keep it lubed?
Cheers.

You can put an E36 or Z3 rack in. If you search there a lot of DIY posts detailing swap and options. E36 is fast and Z3 is REAL FAST.

Hmmm...Z3 sounds tempting.

So any problems if I just remove PS belt and run it without PS fluid?

you should run it with fluid, it´s pressure that pumps it out, if you run it without belt there is no pressure and shouldn´t leak

keep the fluid in, it will be harder then a no PS car, i'v been running it for a little while because i havn't had time to join the to ps hoses together. you need to link the hoses in a loop and then it will be the same as a no ps rack.

I've been running without the belt for some time. I'll eventually take the pump out when I stop procrastinating. I'm not sure where the leak is located, but it would empty out within a couple of days, so it was a large one. I haven't felt or heard anything that would lead me to believe I've done something terrible to the rack. I love the way it feels on the freeway and most roads now. It was a pain parking, but my musculls have developed a bit, and I'm used to it and am able to turn the wheel with ease. (Something to look forward too ha ha.)

I'll look into the Z3 swap. Anyone know the number of turns lock-to-lock for the Z3?

I went several months without a belt.
My pump went completely dry.

Only time mine was a hassle was at speeds below about 2mph, and when on the cell. Otherwise teh steering felt almost the same,

Last month the wonderfull state decided that if I had powersteering it all had to work...  Fun...

I would not running the pump compltely dry for too long. Every month or 2, add a but of fluid and turn the pulley, this will keep the seals in it lubricated. Just a little bit. It will also lube the rack without leaking like crazy.

To repair it, you have serveral options.
An e36 rack works, as does an z3, both do require some mods. Not sure how much though, I think Pelican has a how-to.
An e30 M3 rack bolts in, but is EXPENSIVE!
You can also buy a rebuld kit for $60.

Reman'd racks run from about $200 to over $500 for a 318IS. So be sure to shop around!

To change it out  (easy and fast job really)
I bought a remanufactured rack from discountsteering.com With a return shipping box, core charge and 2 day shipping, it was a bit over $300. Core was $50, so well under $300 and these are Sachs racks, very nice. The only bad thing is the packaging could be better, but then again, it got here fine, so I guess I cannot say much.

Rebuilding is fine, but I looked at it like this, it it is worth the money to be able to put it in and know it will work, as opposed to spending $60, put it together, put it in, only to find I damaged a seal.

I recomend buying 2 new tie rod ends (the tie rods are included with the rack, just not the ends).

A pickle fork, and about 3 hours is about what you need to install it.

I propped the front up on stands, popped the tie rod ends, loosened the rack (do this first or you will be working in fluid), then teh collumn, (try to keep the wheel straight), then remove the lines. Finally remove the rack itself. A twist and then slide to the right (of the car) allows it to fall out.

Before you do anything, get the setup as straight as possible and measure from the center of one end tie rod end to the other (on the back side). Now remove the collars, put them on the new rack, then the tie rods (try to get the pointing same direction as before, look at the car if needed), measure, tighten.

Put a bit of fluid in the pump to flush it out. Have a catch can handy. Run some fluid through a paper towl to ensure there is no metal coming from the pump. Rack warranties are void if you do not do this. If there is metal, replace the pump.

Put the front end back together rack in loosely (watch the lines so they are not damaged), install lines, then tighten rack in place with some locktite. hook up tie rod ends, make sure the boots are straight. Hookup steering, eyeball it straight, install bolt. Take it for a quick drive to center the wheel (place tape on the wheel vertically, while the front wheels are straight this way when you park you will know when the wheels are straight), remove steering bolt, re-center wheel, install bolt with locktite.

Done.
If you are good, no alignment necessary, though this is not recomended. I got away with it.

By the way, the seals in the rack go by using powersteering fluid, and age.

Apparently a ton of e30's are all getting them replaced right now, so wear is likley part of it.

Powersteering fluid does not apear to harm the pump.

You can buy a rebuilt 318is OE rack from Griffith's for about $300 with core exchange.

Personally, that's the route I'd go with as it's a professional rebuilt unit and you know it's gonna last.  If you go with a used E36 or Z3 rack, who knows.  But, supposedly the newer rack bolts up without much modification on the airbag cars (like ours).  It's the early ones you have to modify the steering knuckle and all that crap.

I think you have to make a new plate where goes through the firewall.  Do a search on Google.

What else are you supposed to run in the rack?  I don't think this setup uses the Pentosin hydraulic fluid like some of the other cars.

I've always read that ATF is the recommended fluid for the PS on our cars.

Perhaps others with more knowledge can confirm...

Yeah, I've only run ATF in my car. It says so on the PS reservoir cap. But as I wrote in my other post, i'm getting rid of my PS, though.
