The Car Lounge was at the Carlisle Import Kit Replica Nationals last weekend when we stumbled across this.  Produced by Hartley Enterprises and based on two Suzuki GSX1300R "Hayabusa" 1.3-liter engines, this small-frame, 2.8-liter, 32-valve DOHC V8 was conceived and designed to fit in a Caterham 7.

At just 20" wide and 19" long, the 200-pound engine produces 400 horsepower at ten thousand rpm, with its 245 ft-lb torque peak at 7500.  Its flat-plane crank, which spins in a billet aluminum crankcase, shares crankpins for opposing cylinders and is attached to 4340 alloy steel H-beam connecting rods.  Fuel is supplied through sequential multipoint port injection with custom standalone engine management and mixes with air fed through eight individual throttle bodies.

There's no mention of price on their website, except that it will be "under $30k", or nearly twice the price of Ford's 400-horsepower, 5.0-liter, DOHC "Cammer" V8.  But, of course, that won't fit transversely in the front of a vintage Cooper.

i wouldn't. at 10,000 rpm +. 200 lb engine, 245lb feet of torque. That thing would be outrageous, especially because it weighs so little. That engine is beautiful.

honestly, i've been waiting for some one to do this. I don't know why this hasn't been done already... In comparison i've bene staring at my neighbors 400 hp 3 cylinder snowmobile engines with a longing desire for the past few years to put it in my car...

Thanks for sharing that. Hyabusa's are going to be the next Chevy 350 going at this rate. Everybody seems to be putting them into everything these days.

If this engine has durability it would be worth limited mass production.  I think it will be limited to low mileage uses. High performance motorcycles are not known for accumulating mileage.  To be a viable street motor it would have to be good for at least 100,000 miles.  I'm hard pressed to see a series that this motor could race in. Still it it's an intriguing concept and appears very well executed. But then you'd expect that for $30K.

Well sorry for being more realistic S38 built with a turbo would cost around 10-12 k complete with wiring and they can handle ~1000hp and probably ~800 ft/lbs of torque which would be useless in an e30, also it would be heavier then the stock motor but who cares for 20K savings I could deal with it.
